On this Independence Day, Nansemond Indian Nation is proud to announce the formation of the Nansemond Indian Patriots Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR)—the first chapter predominantly composed of Native Americans.
By the late 1700s, colonialism had thoroughly transformed Nansemond Indian lives. We were displaced from our ancestral settlements along the Nansemond River and, through assimilation, became a community of mixed ancestry. The fight to defend our land and Nansemond Indian identity was in progress long before the colonies’ struggle for independence.
Despite the injustices suffered, Nansemond Indian Patriots fought and supported the American cause throughout Virginia and North Carolina—including the Battle of Great Bridge which led to the removal of the British Royal Governor from Virginia. This SAR Chapter gives recognition to our ancestor’s unique courage.
Today we ask you to join us in remembering all Native American Patriots who served under great uncertainty about their own futures. Our sovereignty precedes the United States and, due to the contributions of many Native Americans, is it also intricately woven into the fabric of American independence.
